Official Warnings Over the Widening Gap Between Higher Education Outcomes and Labor Market Needs in Iraq

Concerns are mounting in official and academic circles over the widening gap between higher education outcomes and labor market demands, given the rapid expansion of private universities and colleges, particularly in medical and health disciplines. In this context, Iraqi parliamentarians have called for a necessary review of academic admission policies, warning of rising unemployment rates among graduates, especially from pharmacy colleges, which number nearly 100 nationwide. Parliamentary reports indicate that the Ministry of Health's absorption capacity has become highly limited in the face of thousands of annual graduates, necessitating a strategic balance to avoid accumulating tens of thousands of jobless professionals. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Planning affirmed its ongoing efforts to prepare a national strategy aimed at aligning education with the labor market and addressing the imbalances of a rentier economy.
