Parliamentary Calls to Legislate Cyberspace Laws to Curb the Threat of Misinformation

Concerns are mounting in Iraqi circles over the negative impacts of rumors and misinformation flooding social media platforms, which now pose a genuine challenge to societal peace. In this context, former member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Ayoub Al-Rubaie, warned against cyberspace turning into a fertile ground for sparking crises and misleading public opinion, despite the platforms' importance for communication and knowledge sharing. Al-Rubaie outlined the dangers of this phenomenon, citing destabilization, threats to civil peace, and the political exploitation of fabricated information. He strongly urged the enactment of deterrent laws to regulate the digital space and curb fake accounts, while simultaneously safeguarding freedom of expression.
