European Commission Enforces AI Transparency Rules with Stiff Fines for Non-Compliance
The European Commission has officially begun enforcing rules regarding the transparency of Artificial Intelligence systems, threatening non-compliant entities with substantial financial penalties. The new directives require companies, institutions, and agencies to place clear and visible labels on content generated or manipulated by AI, utilizing a designated set of icons for this purpose. The labeling requirements encompass images, audio, and video that simulate real people, events, or entities, as well as emotion recognition and biometric categorization tools, and text published to influence public opinion without human editorial oversight. The legislation also mandates that companies inform users whenever they interact with automated systems rather than a human representative. Under the new laws, violating companies face fines of up to €15 million, or 3% of their annual turnover, with proportional penalties applied to institutions, agencies, and small to medium-sized enterprises.
