Gas Import File: Caught Between National Energy Needs and Regional Balance Calculations

Economic experts believe that the issue of continuing imported gas supplies to Iraq to operate power plants is complexly tied to negotiation paths and geopolitical tensions in the region. Analyses indicate that the locally applied economic pressure policy turns the energy file into a significant negotiating card, challenging Iraq to accelerate its strategic plans to achieve self-sufficiency in natural gas. Economic circles emphasize the utmost importance of associated gas investment projects and the development of local gas fields, not only as an economic necessity to save hard currency but also as an inevitable remedy for the environmental and health impacts caused by flaring. Attention is turning towards completing marine infrastructure projects that will provide Iraq with greater flexibility in diversifying energy import sources, away from monopolies or regional pressures.
