mesoiraq - The official spokesperson for the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Firas Al-Masalmawi, confirmed on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, that Iraq is taking serious strategic steps to end the flaring of associated gas, transforming it into a primary resource to support the energy and investment sectors. Al-Masalmawi explained that the country has endured billions of dollars in annual losses, alongside environmental damage, emphasizing that addressing this issue is a top priority to ensure power plants are supplied and reliance on imports is reduced. He highlighted the activation of major agreements, notably the contract with TotalEnergies, the commissioning of the Halfaya field project, as well as the launch of new licensing rounds and the expansion of gas projects in Basra, projecting that Iraq will reach self-sufficiency by 2028.
