Researchers Use Artificial Intelligence to Design Novel Bacterial Viruses

Researchers at the Arc Institute and Stanford University have successfully utilized artificial intelligence models to design functional synthetic viruses capable of infecting and replicating within bacteria. Published in the journal Science, the study employed specialized genomic AI models trained on trillions of DNA nucleotides to generate optimized viral genomes based on the Phi X-174 bacteriophage family. Laboratory synthesis produced 16 viable viruses that successfully targeted bacterial hosts. While the breakthrough holds significant potential for advancing gene therapy and combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria, biosecurity experts emphasized the urgent need for regulatory frameworks to prevent potential dual-use risks.
