A widespread debate is unfolding in Iraq regarding the smart traffic camera system currently monitoring violations on major highways, with mixed opinions on its role in reducing accidents versus the financial impact of its fines on citizens. In this context, MP Mohammed Al-Bayati denied on Saturday any intention to abolish the system, stating that parliamentary discussions are focused on reorganizing its operational mechanisms to accommodate drivers' economic circumstances. He explained that the proposed amendments will review the value of fines and payment periods to prevent the accumulation of financial burdens without compromising the goal of traffic discipline. Despite praise for the cameras' role in reducing accident rates and promoting a culture of legal compliance since their activation in early 2024, criticism persists regarding the lack of adequate infrastructure on some roads for the system's optimal implementation.
