National Security Service Thwarts Major Crude Oil Smuggling Operation in Basra via Secret Pipeline
In a qualitative preemptive operation, the National Security Service announced on Tuesday (May 26, 2026) the thwarting of an organized attempt to smuggle crude oil on the highway connecting the provinces of Basra and Dhi Qar, following diligent intelligence efforts and proper judicial approvals. The Service explained in an official statement that its detachments operating in Basra province were able to discover a serious security and technical breach, represented by the presence of a pressure pipe buried underground extending for a distance of over 500 meters, which was connected to the main transmission pipeline with the aim of stealing and smuggling crude oil. The operation resulted in the seizure of two tankers at the site, one of which was loaded with crude oil as it prepared to flee, while the other was empty and equipped to receive the smuggled shipments. The statement confirmed that all seized items were confiscated and handed over to the competent authorities to complete legal procedures against those involved.
