Challenges in Marketing Iraqi Dates Locally Amid Continued Influx of Imports
Despite official announcements that Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency in dates and is moving toward expanding palm cultivation, local markets continue to witness a significant presence of imported foreign dates. Specialists point out that Iraqi dates face marketing challenges against imported products characterized by modern packaging and variety, which hinders the local product's ability to compete. Experts attribute the sector's declining capabilities to several factors, including neglect, desertification, and water scarcity, emphasizing the lack of a genuine vision to protect national products from dumping policies. For its part, the Ministry of Agriculture clarified that importing dates is officially prohibited, and the introduction of some tissue offshoots is solely intended to meet the needs of agricultural expansion with specific, highly marketable varieties, stressing the need to activate customs control mechanisms to protect local production.
