High-Level Iraqi Delegation to Visit Turkey Soon to Discuss Water Crisis and Shared River Quotas

Baghdad is preparing to send a high-level negotiating delegation to Turkey in the near future to discuss the strategic water file and ensure Iraq's fair share of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The delegation will include representatives from relevant ministries and water resource experts. These diplomatic moves come amid an escalating drought crisis and an unprecedented decline in water revenues, which have negatively impacted the agricultural sector, the marshlands, and food security, leading to internal displacement. Through these negotiations, Iraq seeks to conclude legally binding agreements that guarantee its water rights under international law, as well as to enhance joint technical cooperation for data sharing, the development of water management mechanisms, and the modernization of irrigation systems.
